Theological Reasons for Creationism

By Roland Banks

  1. The Scientific method is effective in dealing with things that are occurring in the present because they can be observed and experimented on. However, the origin of the universe or of life itself is beyond science’s purview since no human was around at that time to observe what happened. Therefore, we must look elsewhere for answers to these critical questions. Philosophy helps by explaining that life cannot come from non-life but can only come from an eternal, immortal and never changing being. Theology teaches us about God’s character, that He is the eternal, immortal and never changing being needed to create life. Fortunately, this creator God gave us His eyewitness testimony regarding the marvelous design and creation of everything in His own words as recorded in the Bible, Genesis 1:1, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” and Psalm 33:6-9, “By the word of the LORD the heavens were made and by the breath of His mouth all their host. He gathers the waters of the sea together as a heap, He lays up the deep in storehouses. Let all the earth fear the LORD, Let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him. For He spoke, and it was done, He commanded, and it stood fast.”

  2. Science cannot answer the question of how sin, death, and morality originated, we must again turn to Theology for the answers. It is the doctrine of Creation and Original Sin that explain how there was a time when there was no sin or death or suffering or disease but through the rebellious act of one man, the historical Adam they originated. In Romans 5:12 we hear, “and so through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned.,” God’s very good creation was corrupted by the sin of Adam and through him to all created things. Romans 8:22 tell us, “For we know that the whole creation groans and suffers the pains of childbirth together until now.” (See also Romans 8:20-22.)

  3. Science cannot explain why humans are so unique and different from animals. Only Theology answers this question, explaining that man (mankind) is different because he was created in the image and likeness of God (Genesis 1: 27). God created man purposefully to have dominion over the earth and all the animals so that he could rule over them as we see today.

  4. Science cannot explain why there is hope in the world, along with joy and peace. Theology tells us that because we have a God of hope, we have hope. Romans 15: 13, “Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” What must we believe? We must believe the old redemptive story, that Jesus lived the perfect life and willingly died on the cross for the sins of the world and in the process paid the penalty so that we could be forgiven and through His resurrection on the third day he destroyed death and paved the way for eternal life for those who claim Him as Lord and Savior.
